STOCKHOLM, KOMPAS.com – Jaksa Sweden on Thursday (3/12/2020) said they would no longer assign a mother who locked her child for 28 years in apartment as a suspect.
The reason is, the investigation found that the victim was not physically forcibly detained to prevent her from leaving the apartment.
“We have not found any indication that he has been locked up, tied up, or prevented from physically leaving the scene. There is no indication that there is a locked room,” prosecutor Emma Olsson told AFP.

“The man himself said it was up to him if he wanted to leave the apartment,” he added.
“He’s an adult and can come out if he wants to,” he said, adding that witnesses sometimes saw him outside.
The medical examination also showed no signs of violence.
“He didn’t have any violent injuries. The wounds were sick, infected,” prosecutor Olsson said.
Olsson continued, the social services are investigating this case, especially about reports of victims being expelled from school at an early age and being isolated at home.

When asked whether this could be considered a crime, Olsson said that in cases like this the statute of limitations did not apply.
“People can question her appropriateness as a mother, but now it remains how the social services act,” said Olsson.
“Society now needs to help this man, and this woman too. And ensure that we can prevent something like this from happening again,” she concluded.
Case chronology
The victim’s mother, 70, was arrested this week, and police said her 41-year-old son had been locked up for a very long time, in an apartment in Haninge, a southern suburb of Stockholm, the Swedish capital.
According to reports citing an anonymous relative, the child was locked up for 28 years after being expelled from school.
The relative, who was later identified as the victim’s sister, found him on Sunday (11/29/2020) after the mother was taken to hospital, according to daily reports. Expressen which is quoted AFP.

The man was immediately rushed to the hospital to undergo surgery. He had a wound in his leg and could barely walk, according to local media reports.
His teeth were also running low, and his speaking ability was limited.
After the police found out about the case, the victim’s mother was arrested for allegedly taking her liberty illegally and causing bodily injury. But the woman denied it.
The case received widespread attention in Sweden, where the victim’s sister described the grim situation of her brother and the condition of his apartment.
“There is urine, dirt, and dust. It smells bad,” he told Expressen adding that he had to wade through the pile of trash to get through the hallway.
