A mother pays her son to avoid social media

It’s probably the most interesting deal a teenager has had with his mother. To motivate her son not to register on social networks before his majority, she promised him the sum of 1800€. Deal !

A not easy bet when you know the omnipresence of social networks in the daily life of Generation Z. Yet Sivert Kiefsaas, an 18-year-old American, has refrained from joining any social network since he was 12 years old. The challenge that his mother had given him was intended to protect him from any form of abuse that the use of these platforms may cause.

Her older daughter was obsessed with her presence on Snapchat. This affected his mood, his friendships and this negative effect of the networks motivated the mother of the family to offer a nice sum of money to her younger brother. 1800€ than Sivert has indeed received at his majority as a reward for this challenge and that he now wishes to invest in his student room in St Paul’s University. He explains that he took a lot of positives from this experience: “Even though I almost broke down, it had become a matter of pride and I succeeded”. Far from high school gossip, he was able to focus on his studies and sports and keep only the positive. “A good experience overall”.

To celebrate the end of his challenge, Sivert created an Instagram account, just to not be too out of step with young people of his age. Not easy to get there though: “I feel like I’m 80, I can’t figure it all out and it’s a bit embarrassing.”

Morality: If you want your children to obey you, pay them.
