“Jānis Zālītis is a ‘literary historian from God.’ In the literary life of the Nordic age – the 1920s – and behind the scenes, the researcher is perfectly oriented, and his extensive work resembles a compelling encyclopedia written in a compelling form, in which space is given generously to anyone and anyone who has had any meaning as a Latvian “love and pain poet”. in the short, tragic destined way to eternity, “emphasizes Gundega Green.
“What a sparkling, lively and colorful world, where every event can be explained – yes, such a history of literature can be read borrowed! The feeling of Jānis Ziemeļnieks’ presence is almost tangible,” says Gundega Blumberga.

About the project I am…
In 2018, the publishing house Diary began work on a new major project in Latvian literature I am…. A total of 26 new works are planned in the new series: 13 novels and 13 monographs on the classics of Latvian literature. About people whose deeds and thoughts have shaped us in one way or another, both obviously and unconsciously. The same “we” who live in a series that has made a significant contribution to the field of modern Latvian culture and national self-confidence We. Latvia, XX century in novels, where the writers focused on the spirit of the time, historical events and their footprints in different stylistics.
Project I am… provides series We. Latvia, XX century continuation, increasingly activating social memory, knowledge of history, its research and understanding, focusing on the essence of personality, individual choices, intellectual responsibility.
Aspazija, Anna Brigadere, Anšlavs Eglītis, Jānis Ezeriņš, Gunars Janovskis, Ivande Kaija, Vilis Lācis, Jānis Poruks, Kārlis Skalbe, Ilze Šķipsna, Andrejs Upīts, Eduards Veidenbaums, Jānis Ziemeļnieks. Some of these 13 writers, poets and playwrights so important to literature and cultural history are undeservedly forgotten, while others are canonized and have lost the outlines of a creative personality. However, even more important is the clear diversity of these classics, the very diametrical differences from each other, as well as the demonstration of the mutual mirror images of the individual and society, in which we can very well see today’s processes.
Project I am… is implemented with the support of the State Cultural Capital Fund. Authors of novels and monographs are writers Inga Ābele, Andris Akmentiņš, Guntis Berelis, Māris Bērziņš, Inga Gaile, Ilze Jansone, Arno Jundze, Laima Kota, Svens Kuzmins, Gundega Repše, Osvalds Zebris, Andris Zeibots, Inga Žolude and literary scholars Mai Daukste-Silasproģe, Gundega Grīnuma, Māra Grudule, Ieva Kalniņa, Arnis Koroševskis, Sigita Kušnere, Anita Rožkalne, Olga Senkāne, Lita Silova, Ieva Struka, Viesturs Vecgrāvis, Jānis Zālītis.
