According to the NMBS, the crowds were the result of the exodus of day trippers in combination with the works in Aalter, making Bruges and Ghent transfer stations. There are also fewer direct trains.

The crowds on the platforms were not that bad. “We work with our fixed arrangement when it is very busy, whereby we don’t make travelers wait on the platform, but only allow them in drop by drop. That depends on the number of free places per train,” said spokesman Dimitri Temmerman in Het Nieuwsblad.

At the police of Bruges they sent several patrols on the spot during the heaviest crowds. “We saw on camera images that it was getting busy, but there were no incidents,” says spokeswoman Lien Depoorter.
