A moment of chaos in Bruges station, resulting in long queues and complaining travelers: “Stand on top of each other like sardines” | Bruges

Especially around 6 pm it was drumming for a place in the Bruges station. People were queuing outside and that led to a lot of dissatisfaction. “We are packed like sardines,” it sounded on social media, among other things.

According to the NMBS, the crowds were the result of the exodus of day trippers in combination with the works in Aalter, making Bruges and Ghent transfer stations. There are also fewer direct trains.

The crowds on the platforms were not that bad. “We work with our fixed arrangement when it is very busy, whereby we don’t make travelers wait on the platform, but only allow them in drop by drop. That depends on the number of free places per train,” said spokesman Dimitri Temmerman in Het Nieuwsblad.

At the police of Bruges they sent several patrols on the spot during the heaviest crowds. “We saw on camera images that it was getting busy, but there were no incidents,” says spokeswoman Lien Depoorter. The mass of people had also disappeared relatively quickly. During the rest of the evening it was quiet in the station.
