a mod to play it without VR

Valve

Released on March 21, Half-Life: Alyx is a real showcase for VR. However, some might find that reserving the discovery to players wealthy enough to afford a virtual reality headset is unfair.

It is my opinion that the so-called r57zone is one of them. Fruit of an important work, its mod Half-Life: Alyx NoVR now allows everyone to try out the new Valve game, only equipped with a keyboard and mouse.

One of the most random results

Do not expect to transform Half-Life: Alyx in traditional FPS however. In reality, the work of r57zone has mainly focused on erasing all the peculiarities of the game related to virtual reality, essentially at the level of the hands of the protagonist, Alyx.

As you can see in the video above, the hands of the young activist are frozen here. Imperative to be able to interact with the elements as in any other game in 2D, but at the price of a certain sense of realism and faculties of interactions with the environment reduced to their minimum.

It’s a fact: the controls look anything but intuitive, and the FOV looks way too wide for a traditional solo FPS. A last resort, which does not do justice to the efforts made by the Valve teams to make Half-Life: Alyx an unforgettable experience.

How to install the mod and play Half-Life: Alyx without VR headset?

If, despite everything, you are interested in the experience and you still prefer to try it for yourself rather than watching a let’s play on the Internet, here is how to go about installing r57zone mode. Of course: stay alert about files you can download from the Internet. This is a project carried out by a fan who, perhaps, did not take all the necessary precautions to secure the fruit of his work.

First, go to the project GitHub page, and download TrueOpenVR and SteamVR.

Install the two programs in order, then copy the contents of the “Half-Life Alyx driver” archive to the TrueOpenVR folder. Then launch the program to configure it.

Choose “HalfLifeAlyx64” from the list of available drivers, then apply the changes.

In the SteamVR folder> drivers> tovr> resources> settings, open the default.vrsettings file with a text editor. Change the mode “Stereo: true” to “Stereo: false”, and set “DistanceBetweenEyes”, “DistorsionK1”, “DistorsionK2” to 0, and “ZoomHeight” as well as “ZoomWidth” to 1. Finally choose your resolution by changing the values in “windowHeight” and “windowWidth” if necessary. Save.

Find the whole installation process in the dedicated explanatory video.
