A Mirabel pilot project deserves a nomination for the Eureka!

The City of Mirabel earned a place among the finalists in the “Municipal” category at the Eureka! awards. 2024, thanks to its wastewater treatment project using informed quartz.

Currently being tested in Saint-Canut and developed by Ceresco Nutrition, this system uses informed quartz, an entirely natural mineral, which would allow better efficiency in water treatment. Because when stimulated by an electromagnetic system, informed quartz would stimulate the speed of biochemical reactions and once in contact with oxygen, the activity of aerobic bacteria would be increased. Its stabilizing effect and its marked action on nitrification also ensure compliance with discharge standards and thus prevent ammonia leaks into the air.

Although the system is still a pilot project, it could provide many environmental benefits, including a reduction in energy consumption, nitrogen levels and chemicals harmful to biodiversity. “We have the impression that there is a certain improvement, particularly in terms of the management of the sludge that the plant produces,” notes Jérôme Duguay, director of the Environment and Sustainable Development Department at the City of Mirabel. .

On the other hand, Caresco Nutrition foresees economic benefits, because the system would allow faster wastewater treatment and a 20% greater capacity, thus reducing treatment costs.

“It seems to have a beneficial effect and we are ready to try it longer,” argues Mr. Duguay. In trial for the year 2024, the City of Mirabel has decided to renew its collaboration with Caresco Nutrition by purchasing the product from January 2025.

Recognize sustainable innovations

“This recognition demonstrates that Mirabel dares to innovate to position itself as a leader, particularly in environmental matters,” declared Mayor Patrick Charbonneau when this appointment was announced. Initiated by Écotech Québec, the Eureka! make it possible to reward organizations that stand out for their creativity and their involvement in environmental matters. The winners will be revealed on November 12, during an awards ceremony to be held in Montreal.
