Tragedy on Sunset Beach: Young Minke Whale Found Stranded, Later Euthanized
Sunset Beach in Cape May, New Jersey was the scene of a heartbreaking event Tuesday afternoon. A young minke whale, estimated at around 20 feet long, was found beached near the wreckage of the SS Atlantus, drawing a crowd of onlookers.
Local whale watching expert Jeff Stewart, who rushed to the scene after seeing images posted on Facebook, reports that the whale was still alive just before 3:30 p.m. His hope, however, was tempered with a grim reality. "It’s very sad," Stewart said, explaining that "the whale’s internal organs were being crushed by its weight outside of the water. It likely became beached because it was sick."
The Marine Mammal Stranding Center was called in to assess the situation and ultimately made the difficult decision to euthanize the whale shortly before 4:40 p.m.

Minke whales, among the smallest baleen whale species, are known to use a specialized filter-feeding system to consume krill, plankton, and small fish. The young adult whale found on Sunset Beach faced a seemingly insurmountable fate, its inability to return to the water highlighting the fragility of these majestic marine mammals.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges whales face in our oceans. From pollution and habitat loss to fishing entanglement and climate change, these threats can severely impact whale populations. While the loss of this individual is tragic, it underscores the importance of continued conservation efforts to protect these incredible creatures.
