From this Sunday, July 4, a new Statue of Liberty is on display in the United States. This reduced model is loaned by France for a few years.
A nice surprise on this American national holiday. A second Statue of Liberty on loan from Paris has just been installed on Ellis Island, opposite Liberty Island. It will remain on display in New York throughout the weekend of July 4th.
A symbol of Franco-American friendship
The work was on loan from the Museum of Arts and Crafts in Paris in the United States in a gesture aimed at cementing Franco-American friendship. The larger version of the Statue of Liberty, which measures 93 meters, had also been donated by France to the United States.
A journey in several stages
The journey began a month earlier in Paris, where the bronze little sister taken from the original mold was being maintained. For this trip across the Atlantic, the statue was “put in a sarcophagus, itself strapped in a container equipped with a box to geolocate it, ensure the doors are closed and control the temperature”, explained Damien. Denizot, deputy director of communications for the French shipowner CMA-CGM.
“We found it very important to have this meeting between the little sister and the big sister, especially on July 4, and then on July 14, it will be inaugurated again, but in Washington”, declared Philippe Étienne, French ambassador to the United States.
The last stage will be the inauguration of the statue in the garden of the residence of the French Ambassador to the United States in Washington on July 14, the French National Day. She will remain in the American capital for the next ten years.
