Scientists in Australia have found a centipede with more steps than any other animal known so far, DPA reported.
It has more than 1,300 feet and lives deep underground, according to today’s scientific publication in the “Scientific Report” newspaper.
No centipede with more than 750 legs has been found so far.
The creature, called Eumillipes Persephone, was found more than 60 meters underground during a drilling for minerals in Western Australia, BTA reported.
The miniature animal (0.95 mm wide and 95.7 mm long) consists of 330 segments, a conical head with huge tentacles and a beak with which it feeds, scientists say.
The scientific name of the animal means “true millipede”, and Persephone is the ancient Greek goddess of the underworld.
An adult female studied had 1,306 legs and another had 998. Two adult males had 818 and 778 legs, respectively.
The previous record was a 750-legged California centipede.
