A Microsoft employee was stealing gift cards. He earned $ 10 million on it

A Microsoft employee stole gift cards for $ 10 million. That is PLN 38 million. And then he sold them online.

For almost two years, Volodymyr Kvashuk, one of the Microsoft employees, exploited a vulnerability in the testing system that allowed him to obtain Xbox gift cards, which he later sold online. In total, it would expose the company to a loss of $ 10 million. His career as a gift card provider was cut short and the man himself was brought to trial. The punishment was severe. Nine years’ imprisonment, $ 8.3 million repaid and deported to Ukraine, where he came from.

When asked how he managed to come up with it, he answers such a surprising scam Bloomberg in an extensive reportage. It turns out that Microsoft employees had special payment cards and test accounts programmed so that every purchase they make would be automatically canceled. Equipment ordered in this way was never shipped. The Ukrainian discovered that this works a bit differently in the case of gift cards for Xbox consoles, which, despite the canceled transaction, fell straight into his hands. And a moment later to the Internet “at a bargain price”.

Kvashuk tried to cover his tracks. He used not only his account, but also his friends (which he had previously stolen), he made transactions using servers from around the world, and the money he earned was quickly “liquidated” on cryptocurrency exchanges and bitcoins. In turn, he described the obtained income as “gifts from relatives” in his tax returns.

Initially, he used this knowledge sparingly, but became greedy over time. In total, in less than two years, it generated over 152,000 codes worth between $ 10 and $ 100. In this way, he “collected” $ 10 million. The Ukrainian did not hide much about his income. He lived in a luxurious villa by the lake, he planned to buy a yacht, a summer house in Hawaii and … a seaplane.

Now he will turn the luxuries into a cramped cell in one of the American prisons.
