A meteor about the sounds of Mars, the intrigue of molecules and the camaraderie of dinosaurs

The first sounds from Mars

For the first time, humanity has successfully sent a microphone to Mars on a spacecraft. Two previous attempts failed. Only the Perseverence vehicle has supplied us with recordings since its landing in February this year. Ing. Tomáš Přibyl from the Technical Museum in Brno in Meteor said that it is not easy to record on Mars at all. The air is as thin as in our country at an altitude of 30 km above sea level. Even a wind at a speed of 450 km per hour creates pressure just like pressing a trigger on an air rifle with your finger. In Meteor, we described what’s on the first 6 sound recordings from Mars.

Two types of wines

Tartaric acid can be obtained both naturally from wine and artificially produced in the laboratory. They are chemically identical. What was a surprise when, in 1823, the French physicist Jean-Baptiste Biot and a colleague released polarized light through solutions of both acids: While laboratory acid turned its plane to the right, industrial acid did not! 24 years later, the mystery was solved by a bright chemistry student Louis Pasteur “Laboratory tartaric acid deflects polarized light to the right because all of its molecules and crystals are dextrorotatory. On the other hand, industrial acid is a mixture of the same amount of right-handed and left-handed crystals, so their optical effect is canceled … ” He thus discovered optical isomerism. We remembered this in the section What Happened This Day, which is being prepared by Ing. František Houdek.

It may sound strange, but from time to time there are signs that some species of dinosaurs may have helped each other. For example, some large but clumsy and slow herbivore could have its spies and guards in the form of troodons, about two meters long and one meter high theropod dinosaurs. They had big eyes, supposed to have excellent eyesight. The role of guardians would suit them. In addition, large carnivores would find it difficult to defend themselves. It was also in their interest to search for the proximity of herbivorous giants, who could protect them at least a little in the herd. Can such a “friendship” be substantiated by facts? We asked the publicist Vladimír Socha.

There are several types of mushrooms that diversify their diet with a meat diet. For example, oyster mushrooms can eat nematodes. These very small animals around the world have no chance of escaping, although the fungus cannot move to catch them. But he uses a special poison to immobilize his victim. The exact biologist prof. How does an insect cope with temperature fluctuations?

A person has it easy when he is warm, he puts it off when he is cold, he puts on a sweater. Some species of animals do something similar – they grow a special thick winter coat. But how is it going in the world of insects? Small vulnerable bodies do not escape before the winter. Nevertheless, they can cope with both low and high ambient temperatures. How? We read it in the book of entomologist prof. Jana Žďárek Endangered by insects, published by Academia.
