A man who was visiting a beach in New South Wales, eastern Australia, found a message in a bottle, which later turned out to have traveled about 300 km.
Scott Gutterson, who was swimming at Moraes Beach in Jervis Bay, said Sunday that he found the bottle covered in seashells, and inside it was a paper message.
According to Gutterson’s Facebook post, the message was from a girl named Vicki, in which she wrote that her father, who works in the Navy, dumped it in the ocean in late 2020.
Vicky wrote, “I am 10 years old and today’s date is December 4, 2020 which precedes my father’s birthday. My birthday is September 30, 2010.”
Gutterson said he used the contact information in the letter and had already reached out to Vicki, now 12, and her father.
He wrote on Facebook: “The father did not believe his ears when I said that his daughter’s letter was in my hands, and when I told him where I found the bottle.”
Gutterson said he plans to return the bottle to the family in person during Easter.
