The Psyche spacecraft carrying NASA’s Deep Space Optical Communications (DSOC) experiment broke new ground by beaming a laser message to Earth from beyond the Moon. Positioned at a distance of 16 million kilometers, approximately 40 times further from the Moon, DSOC has been considered a ‘technology demonstration’ aimed at improving data transmission for two years.
In its first laser beam on November 14, DSOC used a laser transceiver to send a near-infrared laser along with test data to the Caltech Palomar Observatory in California.
