A Mesmerizing Evening: Highlights from the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden’s Summer Festival

“Every note is a treasure,” says a colleague.
Even the soft tones are sensual and clear. The coloraturas of Joyce DiDonato sound incredibly perfect.
“It’s wonderful that I was able to experience this valuable voice,” said an older visitor with tears in his eyes.
Two singing scholarship holders from the Karlsruhe University of Music, who each invested around €200.00 for their tickets in the 10th row: “To experience such a tall colleague and to be able to watch her stomach breathing is a special experience. Unfortunately, it is only possible up to this row”.

Yannick Nezet-Seguin, one of the most important conductors in the world, led the great MET Orchestra from New York with refreshing commitment.
It was no coincidence that the Canadian-born conductor chose Hector Berlioz’ works for this exclusive gala concert. Berlioz once invited guests to musical evenings in the Kurpark, where he performed classical and contemporary works with the municipal orchestra he directed. Berlioz called these evenings “Festival” and is thus the godfather of the festival city
Baden-Baden is rightly at the center of such an evening.

The summer festival of the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden “La Capitale d’Ete” (Summer Capital) was opened with 2 arias from Hector Berlioz’s opera “The Trojans”, which he composed mostly in Baden-Baden in 1856.
This was followed by the legendary “Symphonie fantastique”.

The audience of the well-attended Festspielhaus gave the artists standing and prolonged applause.
Then there was a surprisingly fantastic encore by the famous American mezzo-soprano. Pianissimo with goose bumps.
The multiple Grammy winner’s soft key and emphatic performance of “Morgen”, from Richard Strauss’ Op.24 No. 4, was the highlight of her performance.

London-Paris-Baden-Baden, these are the stops for the MET Orchestra from New York when it returns to Europe in July after many years.

“Some of my best musical memories are made in Baden-Baden,” says Nezet-Seguin in a video for the 25th anniversary of the Festspielhaus this year.
