If reality TV shows can now serve as a springboard for living off your image on social networks, for some they can also precipitate them into a deep depression. This is what the journalists of Society have tried to update thanks to the numerous testimonies of former participants. In their latest issue, on newsstands on August 4, they collected comments from young women who had experienced the excesses of this kind of program.
Infernal cadences, manipulation of personalities, moral harassment or humiliation, the price to pay is a tough one to gain a little popularity on social networks. “I have never cried so much in my life as at this time,” says Sanaya when she talks about her return from “Angels”. “I normalized things that I should never have normalized. When you find yourself at home, you say to yourself ‘but how could I say yes“?”, explains the young woman. It must be said that upstream, the way of bringing them in is rather well established.
Aymeric, who worked for several years as a casting manager and then a journalist on the set of several NRJ12 and W9 shows, tells how he tries to convince young women: “At worst, you’re in a villa, you tan, you make friends, you find love, you gain followers, you do product placements and you earn a lot of money. I don’t see what you have to lose.“
And it is true that some stars of this genre of programs have gained immense popularity on social networks since their appearance on the small screen. A celebrity who even visibly allows some to go beyond the limits during filming. Aymeric keeps the memory of a candidate who has exceeded decency several times. “We excuse everything because he has a lot of followers… He behaved very homophobic towards me and he hit the presenter. And yet, during the editing, we managed for him to leave with dignity“, he says.
