The meeting was held in New York, where the 89-year-old Tibetan leader is recovering from surgery on both knees.
During this meeting, Ms. Zeya affirmed “the commitment of the United States to promote the human rights of Tibetans and to support efforts to preserve their unique historical, linguistic, cultural and religious heritage,” said the Department of Defense in a press release.
China will firmly control access to Tibet, an area it considers an inalienable part of its territory.
Beijing regained control of the previously largely independent Tibet in 1951 before the Dalai Lama went into exile in 1959.
Ms Zeya also spoke on Wednesday of America’s “support” for “resuming dialogue between (China) and His Holiness”, interrupted since 2010, according to a press release.
Beijing reacted on Thursday by condemning this meeting and accusing the Dalai Lama of being a “political exile who engaged in separatist activities against China under the guise of religion”.
The Dalai Lama has been the political and spiritual leader of the Tibetans since the mid-20th century, based in China but close to the United States. However, he resigned as the political leader of his people in 2011.
