A measure to create a remote work program in the government is already law

Starting next fiscal year, public employees will be able to benefit from a telework program after the governor Wanda Vázquez Garced sign a law that allows it.

The Remote Work Act of the Government of Puerto Rico orders the agencies, instrumentalities and corporations to create the program so that the officials can do their tasks remotely.

“It is a work program that allows an employee to carry out all or part of their work outside the regular office area”, explained the first executive in a press release.

Due to the emergency caused by the coronavirus COVID-19 In Puerto Rico, the government and private companies have been forced to implement remote work in order to offer their services.

Vázquez Garced stressed that This option is for every qualifying employee.

“We are going to streamline processes, decrease government spending on profits and leases,” said the governor.

The measure, which has as its coordinating agency the Office of Technology and Innovation Service, establishes that the agencies must qualify the eligible employees to carry out their tasks through the program, notify them of their eligibility and provide them with training.

Each agency shall ensure that the employee’s participation in the program will not diminish his or her agency’s performance.

It is established that those employees whose physical presence is essential in the agency due to their specific tasks, material handling or information that the agency has determined is not suitable for telework, will not be eligible.
