A massive failure of an Italian bank. Customers with billions in overdraft

A blocked website, payment rejection or login errors are minor faults of Polish banks compared to the failure experienced by Italians.

Bank ING Italia had a huge mishap, about which the Italian daily Corriere della Sera wrote. Customers on Thursday, September 2 they noticed a considerable overdraft on their accounts. The amounts were as high as EUR 290 billion, that is, sums they never even had in their accounts.

Internet users quickly informed the bank about the unexplained overdraft, and Twitter was flooded with a wave of screenshots of accounts with gigantic amounts in the negative. However, the bank reassured the panicked customers and explained that there was a failure.

One of the “debtors” tweeted: “I have an overdraft facility of € 269 billion and almost died. If you transfer me 1 percent of this amount as an apology, I will not change the bank.”

The bank apologized to the customers, removed the defect, but the customers rather could not count on even a “modest” percentage of the amounts that appeared on their accounts.
