The fire that broke out in Joensuu’s Kiihtelysvaara on Wednesday evening ended a marriage that had lasted more than 35 years.

The police said on Thursday that they suspect that the 59-year-old woman who lives in the house started the fire on purpose. The woman’s 63-year-old husband, who also lived in the house, died in the fire.

In Thursday’s police announcement, it was said that the woman is suspected of murder. The police arrested the woman who was transported to the hospital and transferred her to the Joensuu police prison.

Iltalehti reached the head of the investigation, the crime commissioner Petri Tirrosen on Saturday afternoon. Tirronen did not want to comment on the case in any way.

At least on the surface, there are no signs of a big drama in the lives of the couple who are prone to agitation.

The couple got married at the end of the 1980s.

According to Iltalehti’s information, the woman has been charged with aggravated drunk driving in the past ten years, but she reportedly has no history of violent crime.

Neither side of the couple has recent foreclosure notices. They jointly owned their home in Kiihtelysvaara, which was not badly damaged in the fire.

According to the rescue service, the fire was extinguished in about an hour and a half. The fire caused some smoke and soot damage to the building.

A burning idyll

The house the couple lives in is located in an area that could even be described as a rural idyll.

The nearby landscape has been maintained with the help of sheep. There is more than three hectares of space on the plot. There is very little population in the area.

There are plenty of trips to the hustle and bustle of the city. The distance to the center of Joensuu is about 45 kilometers, and to the village of Kiihtelysvaara about twenty kilometers.

At the beginning of April, another building fire broke the peace in the nearby area, but according to Tirkkonen, the head of the investigation interviewed by the newspaper Karjalainen, there is no indication that the two fires are connected.

Kiihtelysvaara was also in the headlines due to a fire a few years ago, when the nearly 250-year-old wooden church located in the center of the village was destroyed.

As a result of the incident, a man in his thirties was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison for aggravated vandalism and almost three million euros in compensation.
