A man entered the monastery of the Holy Spirit of Monte de Gilet on Saturday, in the Spanish province of Valencia, and attacked seven monks of the congregation while shouting “I am Jesus Christ!”, local media reported.
Around 10:00 a.m., one of the Franciscan monks was in the kitchen and heard screams on the upper floor of the monastery. When he arrived, he saw a man savagely beating some of his companions, one after another, with everything he had at hand: a cane, a staff and even a glass bottle, he told 20minutes.
“I am Jesus Christ and I am going to kill the friars!” shouted the aggressor who fled towards the mountains after the attack, without taking anything from the temple and without causing material damage. This Sunday he was arrested by the Civil Guard.
After the attack, health services transported a 76-year-old man affected by head trauma to the hospital, as well as three other injured friars aged 57, 66 and 95. Of the seven friars in the community, all were reportedly injured. One of them is in critical condition and the other in serious condition.
According to investigation sources, the aggressor is a 46-year-old man of Spanish nationality who is detained at the Puçol Police headquarters, waiting to be brought to justice, expected this Monday.
“There has been no shortage of people who have come to support us and offer to stay as long as possible,” declared one of the religious.
