NEW YORK – A simple act of kindness turned into a deadly brawl at a Brooklyn cigar shop, according to witnesses on the spot.
The video captured the fight inside a Gowanus Sector cigar shop on Wednesday between Jay Nunez, 37, and another man. A witness said Nunez made a comment that he did not receive a “thank you” from a man he opened the door for, to which the other man said he never asked Nunez to answer.
Video footage of the wild fight shows Nunez, dressed in white, and the suspect exchanging shots in the shop before the fight continued outside.
“He was trying to stop the fight. I told him, put the knife away, it’s not worth it,” said a shop employee at our sister station NBC 4 New York who didn’t want to be identified. “Once they got out, there was nothing I could do.”
The worker said Nunez’s last words were about being stabbed before he collapsed covered in blood and stumbled into the shop again. The suspect could be seen on video as he left the scene on a bicycle.
Shocked by the incident, the victim’s mother, Lucía Canella, said she couldn’t believe she had lost her son in a deadly dispute due to bad manners.
“You can at least say thank you, that’s all he asked for. But he fought and lost, I lost my only son, “Canella said.
Police are looking for the suspect. No arrests have yet been made.
