A 17-year-old man has been arrested by police in the Indian state of Odisha on charges of selling his wife just a month after their wedding to a 55-year-old man in Rajasthan, where he went to work in a brick kiln.
The 26-year-old woman has been rescued by police with “great difficulty” since
local villagers refused to allow the police to take her away because they said they had paid for her.
“In August, the couple went to Rajasthan. A few days after starting his new job, the 17-year-old sold his wife to a 55-year-old from the Baran district for 180,000 Indian rupees ($ 2,668), police said.
The couple had not married until July this year.
Then
The 17-year-old husband spent the money on restaurants and bought a smartphone.
He later returned to his village, and when his wife’s family asked about her, he said she had left him.
The girl’s family questioned the story and filed a complaint with the police. After questioning, it was established that the young man had sold his wife. A police team was then sent to search for the woman. The 17-year-old was brought before a juvenile court on Friday and sent to a correctional facility.
