A 60-year-old man is missing this Saturday, July 23, in Austria, after torrential rains and mudslides which caused extensive damage and the evacuation of hikers in the mountainous region of Tyrol, according to the police.
The victim is “most likely a priest” whose car was taken away, police told AFP.
Roads cut, houses and bridges damaged
Another vehicle was buried, but its two occupants, a 26-year-old Slovak and a 24-year-old Austrian, were rescued by firefighters. They were taken to hospital with “injuries of undetermined seriousness”, according to a press release.
Investigations are underway to determine if other motorists have been affected.
The bad weather, which occurred overnight from Friday to Saturday in the Stubaital valley, south of Innsbruck, cut roads, damaged houses and bridges.
55 people still stranded in a shelter
About 120 clients of a mountain refuge were stranded: 65 of them were airlifted on Saturday and the others will be on Sunday.
Austria had also been the prey end of June of bad weather which had caused the death of an 82-year-old man in the south of its territory.
The multiplication of extreme events in Europe is, according to scientists, a direct consequence of global warming.
