A man jumps out of a passenger plane at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport

Southwest Airlines said in a statement that Southwest Flight 4236 arrived safely in Phoenix from Colorado Springs.

“Initial reports indicate that while the flight was heavy at the gate, a customer exited the plane through the back galley door,” Southwest Airlines spokesman Dan Landson said. The captain of the plane stopped the plane and reported it to air traffic control (ATC).

It is not clear how the aircraft door was opened.

Phoenix Fire Brigade Captain Todd Keeler said in a statement that Phoenix Fire Station 19, located at the airport, was notified of the incident at around 8am.

Keeler said the man landed on the asphalt and headed for the fire station, entered the building and locked himself in a bedroom.

“After a few minutes, the firefighters managed to convince the adult man to open the door where he was evaluated, treated and taken to a local hospital for a lower limb injury,” added the fire brigade captain.

Southwest Airlines said authorities responded to the incident, after which the flight continued “to the designated gate.”

A spokesperson for the Phoenix police told CNN that he was “aware of this incident and investigations are ongoing at this time.”

It was unclear whether the man would be sued.
