A man in his 30s escaped arrest after following the woman in front of her home and hitting her on the head several times with a rubber mallet. The court rejected the arrest warrant on grounds such as the suspect’s admission of a crime and deep remorse.

Seoul Jongno Police Station announced on the 9th that it arrested Mr. A (32) as the felon in charge on charges of attempted murder and breaking and entering on the 4th and is investigating without detention.

Mr. A is accused of assaulting Mr. B, a woman in her 40s, on the head several times with a rubber hammer as she was walking home from Donui-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul at around 0:30 on the 4th. A, who followed Mr. B from the alley, committed the crime when Mr. B pressed the password for the front door.

Mr B collapsed after fleeing onto the main road, and a citizen who discovered him reported it to 112. Mr A, who had been hiding on the roof of the building, was caught by the police around 1 am night of that day. It was investigated that Mr A and Mr B were not even in a one sided relationship. Police are scanning closed circuit (CC) TV near the scene and examining Mr A’s movement and situation at the time of the crime.

Mr A, who was drunk at the time of the crime, is known to have stated in a police investigation “I don’t know why I did it because I was drunk.”

In view of the seriousness of the case, the police requested an arrest warrant for Mr. A on the day of the arrest, and the prosecution requested it, but the Seoul Central District Court rejected the warrant. The court said: “The case itself, such as hitting the head, is one of them, but there is no fear of fleeing, and the degree of injury suffered by the victim has not reached a serious level.” Considering family relationships, etc., the appeal to fear of escape and destruction of evidence is thought to be somewhat lacking.”

The prosecution expects to complete its investigation and reapply for an arrest warrant for Mr. A at some point. Personal protective measures have been taken, such as giving Mr. B a smart watch.

Attorney Soo-yeon Lee said, “One of the stories I hear from victims is that ‘the perpetrator knows information about my home, but the victim knows nothing about the perpetrator.'” A situation arises that goes to the court should have taken into account”.
