A Man Finds a Note in a Book from a Flea Market, Realizing It Is a Cry for Help from a Mother of Two

Erabaru.net. A man betrayed by love finds a note in a book from a flea market and realizes that a single mother of two desperately needs his help.

Sweet kisses and cozy nights are lies. Hugs and promises were lies. “I’m glad we’re done!” Cole grumbled as he packed his ex-fiancé’s belongings, a wave of relief washing over him.

Lara was beautiful, young, and the most beautiful woman Cole had ever seen in his life. When he proposed to her and she said yes, he was the happiest man in the world. However, months before the wedding, he had doubts about marrying her.

On Christmas Eve, when she discovers how he cheated on her with her best friend, she knows exactly why she feels that way. So after packing up her things, she is relieved to have been rescued from a terrible life partner…

Cole had packed most of his things into ugly brown boxes when he came across an old book, which had been gifted to him by Lara. He loved old books, their yellow pages, and the perfect words written by writers. Even though he hated Lara, he couldn’t hate a book.

So Cole opened it and began to read, not noticing when the hours had passed. Then he opened a new page and found a strange note.

“A tired mother of two children is worried about him. Will help ever come to me? I do not know. But do I need help? Yes, very much. This is my contact number… Call me if you can save my rotten life from loneliness. I don’t think I can keep it any longer.”

“What does this mean?” Cole wondered. “Ah, it’s an old book. Someone must have left him a long time ago.”

Cole had left the note on his bedside table and would return later tonight drinking wine. He didn’t know if it was a sudden burst of courage under the influence of the wine or his heart breaking, but Cole dialed the number.

After a few rings, a deep, sleepy voice answered. “Who’s this?” he asked.

“Um, hi, hi,” Cole said. “I had this book that my ex gave me, and I found your contact number in it. I just want to know… is there anything I can help you with?”

“Oh Lord!” He heard her sigh. “You must be high. Do you know what time it is? You called a stranger at 1am!”

“Hey, listen, I didn’t mean that, okay? I just want to know-“

“Well, I don’t have time for this. You woke me up, and I’m really pissed off. Goodbye!”

“Hey, but—”

Before Cole could finish, he heard a beep on the other end of the line. The woman had hung up.

Cole looked at the note again and sighed. I guess I shouldn’t have called him this late, he thought. But strange woman. Why leave a message like that when you don’t need help?

Cole tucked the note into his drawer, not expecting to find it again, and went to bed. But the next morning, when he was alone, thinking about how Lara had cheated on him, he felt the need to talk to someone and call her back. He didn’t expect her to pick it up.

“Hey, hi! This is Cole. I called you last night, remember?” she says.

“Just a moment,” he paused. “Sorry. What else?”

“Um, I found this note in the… Ah, well, never mind. I know you were pretty upset when I called last night, and I just wanted to make up for it, so how about some coffee? Wait, I… I mean, where are you from? Sorry, I found this note in a book, and it has your number on it.”

“Oh, so you called me!” Cole heard him laugh. “Um, well, I don’t know what you’re talking about, but sorry I was a little rough on you last night. Do you know of a coffee shop right off the Mainstream Way… if you’re in Atlanta? Let this be my treat. I’m after something now. Shall we meet and talk?”

“Yep, I was in Atlanta. That old cafe?” he asked.

“Yes, that’s him. See you at 3 o’clock, don’t you mind?” he said.

“Perfect, huh! See you later! Look, I also wanted to say that I can help you with anything you want to write on the note.”

“See you later, Cole. Then let’s talk. Thank you!”

Later that day, Cole finally meets the stranger he called in the middle of the night. Her name was Harriet, she was a single mother of two children, and she was amazed by her beauty.

“So all I know about you is that you are a single mother. This is what I found…” he said as he took out a note from the book. “Do you-“

“The Weather In The Streets??” he cut it off, looking at the book. “That’s one of my favorites… where did you get it?”

“Oh yeah, my ex got it. Said he found it at a flea market.”

“That is mine!” she says. “I left the book with the seller! My goodness, the letter is here? Had reached?”

“I don’t understand,” Cole said.

“I think a while ago…” Harriet began. “I am completely devastated, you know. My ex-husband divorced me and didn’t pay any alimony. He found someone else and took everything I had—my children and my mental peace too. I’m fighting to get a job, and I’m fighting to get my kids back.”

“He is a terrible man. All I wanted was to give my two children the best life possible, but I was still lost. I need that help because I am heartbroken and alone, so I am leaving that message, hoping it will reach someone who will help me.”

“And now you seem fine…” Cole said softly. “We just met, but I’m already kinda proud of you.”

“Thank you,” he replied. “But it is not as simple as it seems. I have to work two jobs for my kids, and I’m a bit exhausted. I got sick, was in the hospital for a few days, and had to stop stressing myself out. Now I have a simple job, and I don’t make much, but we’re better off, I guess… Funny, I still believe love and kindness exist. Thanks for contacting me, Cole…”

Years later, Cole and Harriet would remember that conversation and smile. Something had struck between them since their first encounter—were Harriet’s beautiful, heartbroken eyes? Does Cole’s soul yearn to love someone? Was it Harriet’s need for help and Cole’s desire to reach out to help her?

No one knows the answer, but Cole and Harriet are together today as a married couple, living the life of their dreams. After all, love and kindness exist, as Harriet believed.
