The attacker was dressed in “camouflage clothing that resembled that used by Bundeswehr soldiers.” How and where he got such clothes is not yet clear. The DPA wrote that he should have a piece of swastika paper in his pocket.

The perpetrator’s residence is Berlin, and investigators have not yet been able to find out what his relationship is with Hamburg. Police said the attacker had an “extremely confused impression” and was very difficult to interrogate.

The man attacked the victim’s head. He seriously injured the student. Until the ambulance arrived, passers-by took care of him. The young man was seriously injured, but he is out of danger of death.

Foreign Minister Heiko Maas (SPD) called the case an anti-Semitic attack and called on the Germans to be more courageous. “This is not an isolated incident, it is heinous anti-Semitism and we all have to stand up to it,” the head of diplomacy said on Twitter.
–
In #Hamburg a man probably attacked a Jewish student in front of his synagogue with a shovel. This is not an isolated case, this is disgusting anti-Semitism and we must all oppose it! My thoughts are with the student, I wish you a good recovery.

The Hamburg case is reminiscent of an attack in Halle last October, in which armed right-wing extremist Stephan Balliet tried to attack the synagogue and massacre 52 people celebrating the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur.
–
When he failed to get to the synagogue, he shot a passerby and a 20-year-old guest in a kebab shop. He injured several people during his escape. Balliet is now accountable for his actions at the Higher Regional Court in Naumburg.
