(CNN) — A 24-year-old man was arrested and charged after the attempted kidnapping of a 5-year-old boy in Queens that was caught on video, tweeted the New York City Police Department.
The man, who has not been publicly identified, faces charges of attempted kidnapping, reckless danger and acting injuriously against a child under 17, according to police.
NYPD previously said they were looking for two men in connection with the blatant kidnapping attempt Thursday night.
Surveillance footage released by police shows a man getting out of a maroon sedan and moving rapidly toward a group of children and an adult walking down the street. The man grabs the smallest child as he walks several steps ahead of the others.
The man carries the boy to the other side of the sedan, places him in the back seat, and climbs into the driver’s seat of the car.
Meanwhile, the boy’s mother, identified by police as Dolores Díaz López, runs to the passenger side of the car and appears to be having trouble with someone in the front seat. Finally, she grabs her son and pulls him out the front passenger window.
The kidnapping attempt happened quickly, according to the video, and lasted approximately 15 seconds.
“Oh I’m scared” Díaz López told CNN affiliate WABC, about the attempted kidnapping. “I said, ‘My God! My children! Oh my God, my child!’ I screamed, I screamed. But thank God I took my child.”
The car drives away as passersby begin to gather. A man hits the hood of the car with his hand as it starts.
The mother told WABC that she had never seen the men before. A NYPD spokesman said Friday that the incident is not being investigated as an act of domestic violence. Díaz López says the man did not say a word to her or her children: he simply took the boy and put him in the car.
Police say the boy was unharmed.
