A man arrested in connection with the 2016 killing of Eddie Hutch has been released without charge. Hutch, brother of Gerry “The Monk” Hutch, was shot dead in his home in Dublin in February 2016. The man, who was arrested while serving a prison sentence, was being held by Irish police for questioning on suspicion of withholding information about the murder. An investigation into the killing is ongoing, with police having arrested and charged several individuals in connection with the crime over the past few years.
The release of the suspect follows a similar pattern in a number of high-profile cases in Ireland over recent years, including the murders of journalist Veronica Guerin in 1996 and French film producer Sophie Toscan du Plantier in 1996. In each of these cases, suspects were arrested and questioned over periods of several months, only to be eventually released without charge due to insufficient evidence.
A spokesperson for the Irish police said: “An Garda Síochána investigating the murder of Edward Hutch on the 8th February 2016 as part of ongoing investigations into organised crime in the Dublin Metropolitan Region has this morning, the 16th January 2020, released without charge the man in his 30s who was arrested on the 3rd July 2019 in relation to this investigation.”
