The New York police (NYPD) arrested and indicted on Monday an individual suspected of having stabbed a young French tourist last Friday in New York, reports the American daily The New York Post.
The NYPD said on social media that a 28-year-old man was arrested Monday in the Harlem neighborhood after being recognized by a police officer in the middle of the street. According to La Dépêche du Midi, he is now indicted on the counts of “attempted murder in the second degree” and “assault in the first degree”.
Gabriel Bascou, a young man of 27 from Montpellier, had been attacked in the neck with a knife in the middle of the street, as he was leaving a restaurant located at Boulevard Adam Clayton Powell Jr., near from 135th street.
During the events, the young man was accompanied by his girlfriend. New York police said he had been assaulted “for no apparent reason”. The victim was hospitalized and had to undergo a tracheostomy, but his prognosis is not in jeopardy.
The suspect, who resides near the restaurant where the assault took place, is said to be a multi-repeat assailant. According to our colleagues from the Depeche du Midi, the man has already been convicted of harassment and assault, but also for possession of firearms.
