A man (35) from Assen who was killed in an attack was in Somalia for his own marriage

A 35-year-old man from Assen was killed on Sunday evening in a terrorist attack on a hotel in the Somali capital Mogadishu.

The VPRO radio program reports this Foreign Office .

The man visited the hotel because of his marriage. His Saudi wife was also killed in the attack. The man from Assen had the Dutch nationality but was of Somali descent.

Explosion

An explosion took place at the hotel, after which several armed terrorists stormed the hotel. Inside they opened fire on those present.

Police killed four terrorists in a shootout. Bureau Buitenland reports that the man from Assen had telephone contact with family in Somalia during the attack. According to local authorities, the attack was committed by the Al-Shabaab terror group.

Al-Shabaab terrorists are more likely to commit suicide attacks in Mogadishu, with the aim of overthrowing the Somali government. The deadliest attack was committed in 2017, when more than 500 people were killed by a heavy truck bomb. Hotel Afrik is popular with national and foreign dignitaries, foreign visitors and journalists.
