“A Male” U.S. Theatrical Release: A Sensitive Exploration of Latin American Machismo

Cinema Tropical is proud to announce the U.S. theatrical release of A male (A Male), the captivating and moving drama from promising Colombian screenwriter and director Fabián Hernández. The film, selected as Colombia’s official candidate for the Best International Film category at the Academy Awards, is a sensitive and subtle exploration of Latin American machismo and gender dynamics set against the backdrop of the streets of Bogotá.

After celebrating its world premiere in the Directors’ Fortnight section of the Cannes Film Festival and having won numerous awards, including Best Film and Best Actor at the Lima Film Festival, as well as the Libertés Chéries Award at the Gay and Lesbian Film Festival from Paris, A male will premiere at Cinema Village in New York City next Friday, December 8, with additional screenings scheduled for Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington DC (to be announced).

The story focuses on Carlos, a young man who lives in a youth shelter in the heart of the city, seeking respite from the harshness of life. As Christmas approaches, Carlos longs to spend the day with his mother and his sister, who are caught up in the difficulties of urban life. Upon leaving the shelter, Carlos faces the unbreakable environment of the streets of his neighborhood, where the law of the strongest, the alpha ‘male’, prevails.

Carlos navigates the streets of Bogotá under the protection of Freddy, for whom he sells drugs, but when he cannot meet Freddy’s macho expectations, Carlos must choose between his survival and adhering to the social constructs of masculinity.

Dylan Felipe Ramírez Espitia’s breakout performance as Carlos is a moving portrait of coming-of-age cinema into the world of gangs, challenging conventional masculine archetypes. Set in the contemporary context of Bogotá’s post-pandemic socioeconomic upheaval, the film unravels a deeply personal narrative that echoes the struggles of countless young people navigating the desperate consequences of poverty and endemic violence. In an hour and a half, A male promises a story of resistance, devoid of fairy tale endings.

The fascinating cinematography of talented Colombian photographer Sofía Oggioni unequivocally shows a new generation of Colombian filmmakers skilled in sensitively depicting violence. Oggioni’s precise focus on Ramírez encapsulates the inner turmoil as she struggles with unattainable ideas of masculinity, as she fights to survive and reunite with her mother.

The New York premiere of A male is co-presented by the New York Colombian Film Festival and has the support of the Consulate General of Colombia in New York.
