“By the end of the year, only 10% of Sofia’s garbage will be thrown away without processing.”
This was stated by the mayor of the city, Vasil Terziev, in the “Face to Face” show.
He explained that at the beginning of his term, 90% of the garbage was thrown away and the waste processing plant was practically non-functional.
The facilities were not maintained, and a report summed up their condition as tragic. Thus, within a year and a half – two, the fourth cell of the “Sadinata” depot would have been filled, but there was no project for the fifth and sixth. Terziev stated that this problem has been solved.
He pointed out that the previous public order for the utilization of RDF-waste was for 40% of it for BGN 26 million, while the new one reached a price of BGN 22 million for 100%.
On the occasion of the established illegal dumps for construction waste, he stated that a morphological analysis of the garbage is already being done, and new points will be created in the city for the disposal of bulky, construction waste and earth mass.
Next year, new contracts for garbage collection in the capital will be signed, with Terziev saying that the criteria have been raised and promising stricter control.
In connection with the repair of Opalchenska Street, where there are protests due to the cutting down of trees, he said that this is necessary because of the replacement of underground infrastructure and the risk of an accident with the trees if their roots are cut. He defined the felling as inevitable, stating that instead of 39 trees, 53 would be planted.
Regarding the new organization of traffic on “Patriarch Euthymius” Blvd., against which there was also dissatisfaction, Terziev said that the municipality took notes and are waiting for an interpretation from the regional ministry on how to regulate the traffic.
Boyko Borisov’s idea for a tunnel to be built during the expansion of the ring road at Knyazhevo, Terziev stated that this idea, the work of the former chief architect of Sofia Petar Dikov, was not evaluated, and there was also a lot of groundwater in the area. The project of the municipality is to build a flyover.
