The spread of coronaviruses is uneven because few people can infect many others, but most infected people infect only a few or no people. According to a researcher from Hong Kong, only 20 percent of those infected are responsible for 80 percent of other infections. Perhaps there are even fewer superspreaders, because other scientists expect only one to ten percent of those infected.

The reproduction number R is an average number

This seems to contradict the often heard reproduction number R, which is between 2 and 4 in Sars-CoV-2 without keeping distance, which means that an infected person infects 2 or 4 people. However, this R number is an average of all people, which can be used to calculate the course of the epidemic. The unequal virus spread of a person is not the R but the k value. This dispersion factor k is between 0 and 1. The smaller k is, the more infections are attributable to a few people, the super spreaders.

An epidemiological advantage that there are few super spreaders

A small k-value has an epidemiological advantage: If the few superspreaders are recognized after a superspreading event, they and their contacts can be isolated and the virus can be stopped. There is no agreement on the current k value, some researchers say 0.1 – others between 0.4 and 0.6. Superspreading events occur where people gather in closed rooms. The super spreader will not be seen by the eye. Perhaps it secretes a larger amount of virus than others because it has more receptors for the virus or a different immune response to the virus.
