A look back at the building of the UN headquarters in New York

76 years ago, on September 14, 1948, the construction site of the United Nations headquarters in New York was officially established.

A few years earlier, after the end of World War II, 50 countries founded the United Nations. The goal: to maintain peace and security in the world, and to develop cooperation between countries. With the destruction caused by war, the founders could have focused on the worst in humanity, said President Biden. “Instead, they looked for the best in each of us, and strived to build something better. »

According to Benjamin Cohen, at the time the acting secretary-general of the UN, New York – with its large number of immigrants – represented the ideal place to host the headquarters of the organization because in New York “people come from everywhere to live in peace and harmony,” he explained in an interview with the New York Times at the time.

Every September, the leaders of the 193 member states of the United Nations come together on Manhattan’s East Side for the United Nations General Assembly. Suffice it to say that the traffic around the headquarters is getting frenetic. But the downsides are worth it, says Thomas Pickering, who represented the United States at the UN in the early 1990s. “The actions of the UN are still important,” he says. He said the sessions of the General Assembly can shape the views of world leaders, provide legitimacy for the use of force and promote cooperation in protecting human rights.

This year, the high-level week of the 79th United Nations General Assembly will begin on Monday, September 23.
