According to Iltalehti’s information, the man killed by a police bullet is a 46-year-old man from the locality. The man has a large criminal background. He has been convicted, among other things, for the so-called siege of Juupajoki, which took place in January 2023.

Today, Tuesday, April 16, the police were again assigned to a private apartment in Juupajoki, Pirkanmaa. According to the police, the man had directed violence at another person and fled the scene.

According to information from Iltalehti, the woman with serious injuries is in hospital.

The man ran away in a car. The police ambushed the man on road 66, near Juupajoki Niemelänperä.

The car driven by the man stopped on a spike carpet. After this, the man behaved threateningly and fired several shots at the police.

The police returned fire. The man died after being shot by the police.

Hostage situation

In January of last year, the man held his spouse captive in the apartment and refused to come out when ordered by the police. The siege lasted for hours.

In the end, the man surrendered “calmly and unarmed”.

The siege situation spoke volumes in the small Juupajoki. Those who knew the man in his forties described him to Iltalehti as “unpredictable” and “isolated”.

The district court of Pirkanmaa sentenced the man to 2 years and 2 months in prison for, among other things, aggravated assault, deprivation of liberty, violently resisting an official and firearms offence.

The verdict given by the district court in October is not yet legally binding. The matter was to be heard at the Turku Court of Appeal at the end of May.

Criminal record

The police operation that attracted attention in January of last year was not the first time that the police surrounded the man. A very similar situation happened in October 2021.

In this case, the siege lasted overnight, although it was carried out on a smaller scale. During the isolation, the man threatened to detonate the explosives in his possession if the police did not leave the scene.

The police talked the man out of the apartment. He made no resistance. The police found explosives in the apartment.

In 2017, a man shot himself in a private apartment in Pirkanmaa. He ran away from the police, driving a fair amount of speed.

In the end, the man stole a police car and continued his escape in it. The police had to use the gun again.
