A little known tourist destination perfect to visit in September for total relaxation

What’s better than a holiday, even a quick one, than just one weekend in this enchanted place with an ideal climate from June to the beginning of September? In this period the temperature is mild and pleasant with very little rainfall and you can admire extraordinary views.

Discovering one of the municipalities of Northern Italy

It is a little known tourist destination, perfect to visit in September for total relaxation. Gressoney-Saint-Jean, in Valle d’Aosta, at the foot of Monte Rosa in the Lys valley, Gressoney-Saint-Jean offers a truly suggestive panorama.

Its strategic position allows both summer tourism in total relaxation with a mild climate, and winter tourism for its climate also suitable for winter sports. The most popular are trekking with various excursions and skiing.

Here it is possible to admire in addition to the wonderful landscape, an extraordinary architecture of the typical villages of stone and wood houses composed of two floors. This architecture is a cultural historical legacy handed down by the old Alemannic population who are presumed to have founded the village at the time.

In the inhabited center there are two squares, where in one in particular there is the first wooden inn of the village from about 1700. In the other square there is the parish church of San Giovanni Battista which has very ancient origins that are not well defined. Inside you can admire a French wooden crucifix from the 13th century, while on the facade there is a Gothic inscription dating back to 1500.

The history of this church is also linked to the queen Margherita of Savoy, as on the facade there is a bronze bust that represents her. The queen was very attached to this territory and loved to stay there in the summer for excursions on the glaciers of Monte Rosa.

You cannot miss a visit to the Queen’s summer residence, the Savoy Castle, an eclectic style villa, which dates back to the early 1900s. This residence enjoys a wide view over the valley and the peaks of Monte Rosa.

The interiors, which can be visited today, still retain their charm. After the queen’s death in 1926, the castle was closed for a few years before being sold to the Milanese industrialist Ettore Moretti who managed to preserve it until 1981, when it was bought by the region.

The period decorations are in excellent condition as are the few original furnishings. An extraordinary and majestic staircase in solid wood with double helical ramp is the master of the furnishings and a photographic documentation of Queen Margherita that testifies her excursions on the glaciers.
