NEW YORK, Nov 24 (Reuters) – A huge and colorful portrait of the late US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg now greets passersby at a crosswalk in the East Village in New York City.

The three-story mural, which was completed on Friday, features a collage of vibrant images of an eagle, a dove and a flower, symbolizing the life of the judge.

“I think it’s very beautiful … very inspiring,” said Teddy Koutsos, a New York neighbor. “In New York, we get a lot of inspiration through art,” he added.

The creator of the mural, who uses the pseudonym Elle and signs her work “ElleStreetArt,” said she was excited to honor Ginsburg’s life.

The project was commissioned by the IntoAction group and a Los Angeles creative agency TaskForce, organizations that also commissioned the “Hope” poster from former US President Barack Obama.

“What we see is this incredible woman who had an incredible work ethic and who fought hard for what she believed in,” Elle told Reuters.

Ginsburg, affectionately known as “RBG,” died on September 18 at the age of 87 at her home in Washington, DC She was a staunch liberal on the United States Supreme Court since 1993 and many of her decisions defended gender equality and liberal causes.

Raised in a working-class family in the New York borough of Brooklyn, Ginsburg overcame sexism in the male-dominated worlds of law school and law school, becoming the second woman to serve on the nine-member Supreme Court.
