Four of the victims were hospitalized, the ministry said in a statement. Two of them were in a severe condition, but two suffered minor injuries. Another victim was provided with outpatient care.
In the building of the factory “Nevskaya Manufaktura”, which is located next to the Neva River on the October embankment, the flames have taken over several floors.
40 people were evacuated. Three firefighters have been injured in the fire, two of whom were seriously injured and one was mild, the Ministry of Emergency Situations said. The person who died has not yet been identified.
It has taken more than 11 hours to put out the fire, but the fire is now localized.
During the fire, the fire also spread to the roof of the neighboring hostel “Meribel”. The hostel’s residents were evacuated and provided with temporary accommodation.
The huge factory was founded in 1841 as a fabric manufactory. During the Soviet era, the factory was nationalized and operated as a state-owned enterprise, but in 1992 it was privatized.
In recent years, fabric production has continued in some buildings, some have been rented out to offices, and some have been neglected.
