The Hong Kong Tourism Board will hold a countdown to the New Year tonight. Police expect large numbers of people to celebrate along the coast of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon and at tourist attractions. A series of road closures, detours and crowd management measures will be implemented from the afternoon.
In Kowloon, roads in the Tsim Sha Tsui area will be closed in succession from 20:00, including West Kowloon Cultural District and many roads in eastern Tsim Sha Tsui area. The scope of road closures will be expanded in response to the flow of people, and crowd management measures will be implemented.
On Hong Kong Island, some roads in Lan Kwai Fong in the Central District will be closed in the afternoon and traffic diversions will be implemented near the Central Pier in the evening; streets in Wan Chai Convention and Exhibition Center, Golden Bauhinia Square and Wan Chai North will be closed in the evening; the area around the Peak will also be closed depending on road closures for traffic.
To make it easier for citizens to go out and celebrate, some public transportation services will be enhanced tonight: with the exception of the Airport Express and the Disney Line, all other local lines and 7 MTR light rail lines will operate during the night, the Star Ferry runs between Tsim Sha Tsui and Wan Chai, and between For the two routes in Central, the last boat will depart at 1am on New Year’s Day. KMB, NWFB and Citybus also have a number of bus lines in operation in various districts which will either increase frequency or adjust frequency, or even extend service hours.
