A large Czech chain started selling fruit and vegetables for a few crowns. People take it by storm, save decent money

The food market is in a very strange situation right now. On the one hand, food is constantly becoming more expensive, but on the other, it is also still thrown away in large quantities. Both factors have a clear influence on each other. Stores have to take into account that they simply won’t sell part of the food, and so they have to include their price in the ones they manage to give to customers.

Limiting waste

At the same time, it is not worse in any other segment than in vegetables and fruits. Stores have to buy it in bulk from suppliers in order to always have a sufficient selection. But if they don’t sell it, they have to throw it away. If customers come across fruits and vegetables on the shelves that are no longer top quality, it could discourage them from further purchases.

The Penny retail chain has now decided to address this situation. It follows rival Lidl and starts selling boxes full of fruit and vegetables. At the same time, he sells a crate weighing two kilograms for a rather symbolic price of CZK 19.90. You can already buy it in 50 stores, while their number will increase.

Penny says it checks the quality of fruit and vegetables in its stores every two hours. If some do not meet the necessary standards, they are replaced on the sales floor by others. But at the same time, the chain was dealing with what to do with the products it is recalling and which could still be processed, because they do not have major defects and are tasty.

Customers are satisfied

The crates are filled differently, depending on what has just been taken off the shelves. In any case, a kilogram of fruit and vegetables costs less than ten crowns, which is a very favorable offer. If you can pick a crate that contains about what you would otherwise buy, you can save a lot of money. Fruits and vegetables are among the most expensive items. Anyone who ever buys cauliflower or peppers must wonder how much these Czech products can cost.

Penny is also already reporting that there is huge interest in his crates. As part of the pilot operation in just two stores, two tons of fruit and vegetables were sold in this way. Similar boxes are also offered by Lidl, where they have also proven themselves. It costs 25 crowns.
