A kind of “corpse flower” blooms in Belgium

Brussels – A copy of “giant ring”, the largest flower in the world, bloomed this Wednesday in the Botanical Garden of Meise, in northern Belgium, although this year the curious will have to settle for seeing the flowering on YouTube because the greenhouse is closed by the pandemic of coronavirus.

This is the tenth time that the plant has flourished in Belgium since it arrived in 2008, but this time the brave ones who visit it will not be able to appreciate its unpleasant smell of rotting meat, It emits with the aim of attracting insects for their pollination and has earned it the nickname of “corpse flower”.

The colors of this tropical plant fluctuate between yellow, green and fuchsia, but they can only be seen during the 72 hours, which approximately lasts flowering.

The “giant ring” was discovered in 1878 in the rain forests of Sumatra (Indonesia) and is in danger of extinction, reason why the network of European botanical gardens exchanges seeds annually to conserve the species.

When it blooms it can reach 9 feet in height, although this year it has been slightly smaller.
