As an Austrian living in New York, I am often asked about Austria’s past under unexpected circumstances. Memories of the Holocaust are omnipresent in New York and over the past eighteen years I have had countless, completely random, encounters with Jews of Austrian descent who told me the often very sad stories of their families as soon as they realized that I was from Austria.
