NEW JERSEY – A Jersey City, NJ, police officer safely trapped a one-month-old baby and saved his life after the infant was thrown from a second-story balcony over the weekend, officials said. authorities.
The Hudson County prosecutor’s office said Officer Eduardo Matute was among those in uniform who were called to the Jersey City residence Saturday morning after receiving reports that a man was allegedly threatening the life of a baby.
NorthJersey.com reported that he and several officers were under the second-floor balcony as the boy hung over the railing of the venue. Authorities said the suspect dropped the baby after a long confrontation and Matute caught the child and saved his life.
City spokeswoman Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione said the boy was taken to the hospital as a precaution. Mayor Steve Fulop later posted a photo on social media of the officer holding the boy, who was wrapped in a white blanket.
“Thank you to the Jersey City Police Department. Today, the department received a call that a child was in danger, they answered the call and at that moment they saw a man threatening to throw a baby from the second floor of the building. The department established a perimeter to negotiate, however, the man threw the one-month-old baby from the second floor of the building; officers on the scene reacted quickly and were able to catch the baby. Wallace-Scalcione said the man who dropped the baby was immediately arrested and charges are pending.
“Congratulations to the (Jersey City Police Department) and all the officers involved for their heroic deeds and for bringing a safe conclusion to this dangerous situation,” Prosecutor Esther Suarez said in a Twitter post.
