A hydrogen-powered Toyota Hilux will be built. He’ll get a ride from Mirai

Toyota has long been at the forefront of still fledgling hydrogen fuel cell car technology. This approach to electromobility must be a solution to the problem of long battery charging. As part of a special project in 2023, the Hilux concept with such impetus is to see the light of day.

Hydrogen prototype Toyota Hilux it will be the Japanese brand’s first fuel cell pickup. It will receive solutions from the second generation of the model I looked and go up to Great Britain. Why the? Because the whole project is sponsored by the British government, which will allocate GBP 11.3 million (over PLN 60 million). as part of the initiative to develop zero-emission vehicles.

An ordinary Toyota Hilux will serve as the basis, from which the diesel engine will be removed. Its place will be taken by a generator set 185KM and 300Nm. This is less than in the case of a diesel design, but such a solution is simply “at hand”. All because the donor of the entire system will be the second generation Mirai. The hydrogen will be stored in three tanks, but poorer aerodynamics and heavier weight can be expected to mean a slightly shorter range than the Mirai’s 647km.

Toyota will not create the hydrogen Hilux by itself. The government money means that British companies will also participate in the whole process, which on the one hand will help the Japanese brand and on the other hand gain experience that they can use in the future.

We recall that in the case of using fuel cells, hydrogen does not burn, but the effect of oxidation is the generation of electricity. So the Mirai, or soon the Hilux H2 concept, are electric cars that can be refueled instead of being recharged from the socket. Among the challenges of this technology is the improvement of fuel cell efficiency, but also the development of a more economical, efficient and environmentally friendly hydrogen production process (which can be obtained, for example, from water).
