Art lovers in Sydney will be able to feast on around a hundred paintings by René Magritte on Saturday during a retrospective made possible thanks to close collaboration with the Magritte Foundation in Brussels. It is through him that major paintings by the artist, such as “The Empire of Lights” (1954), “Golconde” (1953) and “The Lovers” (1928), are exhibited in the largest city in Australia.
“There has never been an exhibition like this in Australia. It is also a huge exhibition dedicated to the artist’s work, a retrospective of canvases, gouaches, drawings and objects “It’s a first in this country and it’s very important to show our artist to Australians,” Charly Herscovici, president of the Magritte Foundation, explained to Belga during a press conference at the Art Gallery. of New South Wales on Friday.
He welcomed the “enthusiastic” reception received in Sydney for this retrospective devoted to the Brussels painter until the beginning of February. “Australia was very demanding, the organizers did everything to get the exhibition and they succeeded. They won me over,” he confided.
“There are around a hundred pieces on display here in Sydney for the first time,” including many coming straight from Brussels, he confirmed. “There are paintings which belong to the collection of the Royal Museums of Arts and History of Brussels, therefore the Magritte Museum, and then paintings from collectors who have lent their paintings to the Magritte Museum and who have given their agreement to have their paintings sent here to Sydney.”
