‘A huge number of phone calls’: already thousands of compensation claims from travelers for chaos at Schiphol

Thousands of travelers have already submitted a claim for canceled or delayed flights from Schiphol. Claim organizations confirm this after reporting from the ANP news agency. Chaotic scenes took place at the airport over the past two weekends.

Claims organization Aviclaim has now received more than 1650 compensation requests, together amounting to about 1.3 million euros. Founder Remco Kuilman says his organization receives “an enormous amount of phone calls”. Especially after the weekend, many travelers called to ask what their rights are.

Passengers who have missed their flight due to the long queues at the check-in desk, for example, are in principle not entitled to anything, explains Kuilman. “This is seen as a no show and as their own fault.” Only travelers whose flights have been canceled or delayed for at least three hours can claim compensation, Kuilman says.

Flight analyst Paul Vaneker of EUclaim agrees. To date, around 33,000 people have reported to EUclaim who encountered a problem during their flight. It has so far led to about two thousand claims.
