The State Service of Protected Areas under the Ministry of the Environment informs that a huge herd of bison, consisting of 61 animals, is moving towards Jonava from Kėdainiai.
Currently, the bison herd is standing near Vandžiogala, it is fixed near the local road, says the head of the VSTT project “Implementation of Bison Protection Measures”. specialist Rytis Papšys.
According to him, buffaloes pose a danger to farmers who grow not only crops but also vegetables and have a water irrigation system. There are also major transport routes nearby.
Last December, this bison herd moved across the “Via Baltika” road and is slowly moving towards Jonava.
According to bison farmer R. Papšis, large herds split into smaller ones in the spring. It is likely that this herd of bison will also split into smaller groups.
Last year, part of the bison from this Kėdainiai herd was transferred to a new bison in Dzūkija National Park.
A bison is a one-horned mammal of the ox subfamily. In ancient times, it was common throughout Southern and Central Europe, as well as in Lithuania.
In 1969, bison were again brought to Lithuania and entered in the Lithuanian Red Book.
The first five bison were released from the enclosures in 1973. Today, about 130 bison graze freely in Lithuania, they can be found in the forests of Central Lithuania, divided into several changing herds.
