a hospital calls for help in the face of a second wave “stronger than the first”

While all of the beds at the North West Hospital are full, caregivers are asking “Reinforcements of nursing and medical personnel, to cope with the influx of patients”.

The North West Hospital, located 30 km north of Lyon, is sounding the alarm on the impact of the 2nd wave of Covid-19 in the department. “For us, the impact of this second wave is stronger than that of the first”, warn hospital staff in a press release.

And describe: “Since September 18, the measures have followed one another: Increase in resuscitation capacities, increase in medical capacities, creation of covid units, deprogramming of elective surgery. First 25%, then 100% since Monday, October 19. More than 200 people have been hired, most of whom are nurses, caregivers and hospital workers. Many of us have given up our holidays this All Saints’ Day. Of course, we have masks, gowns, medicines, equipment. But our situation is alarming: the number of positive Covid patients hospitalized today is the same as in early April. However, as the incidence rate continues to increase, especially among those over 65, the number of people who go to hospital will become more important ”. Currently the 146 hospital beds are all occupied, 36 were this summer, and the 18 intensive care beds have also reached saturation point. 50% of between are occupied by Covid-19 patients.

“Can we continue?”

Then add: “Patients with other pathologies also need care, and even more than in the first wave, we owe it to ourselves to take care of them. Delays, postponements, cancellations can have sometimes worrying consequences. To the extent of our possibilities, we do everything we can to limit them. Can we continue? ”

In addition, among the 800 residents of nursing homes attached to the North West Hospital, rather spared in the spring, 200 are now affected by Covid-19. “The consequences are heavy for some of them, for the teams around them and for the hospital services that must welcome them”, comments the hospital.

“Our teams, already severely affected by the first wave, are also more strongly affected by the virus. The number of positive cases is high, making the organization of care even more difficult. In our region, the CHUs of Lyon, Grenoble, Saint-Étienne and Clermont-Ferrand are under great strain ”, add the nursing staff who urgently request “Reinforcements of nursing and medical personnel, to cope with the influx of patients” and call the population “To behave in a civic manner, by taking all the necessary measures, wherever they are, to block the virus, by applying barrier gestures and social distancing”.
