The emotion was at its height, this Sunday, April 17, at lunchtime, at the Hippodrome de Chartres. While the visitors were already very numerous in the stands, an accident as tragic as spectacular occurred before their eyes, in the third race.

From the start, a clash occurred between two participants. Paul-Antoine Delacour, the driver of Idole d’enfer, the 4-year-old female who died, was ejected from his sulky. While the race was stopped, the horse set off, alone and at full speed, on the ring of the racecourse. His driver tried to catch up with the animal running but was unable to do so. Approaching the finish line again, the panicked horse then attempted to jump over the barrier. That’s where he ripped open on one of the billboards.
Help was quickly deployed around the animal. Seriously injured, the horse, which had managed to get up, was quickly euthanized by the veterinarian present on the day of racing. During the intervention, a tarpaulin was erected to prevent the public from witnessing this sad spectacle.

An Easter Sunday at the Chartres racecourse
“Accidents of this type happen from time to time,” comments Jean-Luc Thirouin, president of the Chartres horse racing company. “It happens that horses are injured after running away, but it is very rare that they die”.
The animal’s body was kept at the Chartres racecourse. It will be taken care of, starting tomorrow, Monday April 18, by a rendering company.
